What a Thailand tour costs

Every price on this page is the price we charge, not a "from" that turns into something else at checkout. Three numbers cover most of it: a private tour is $230–250 per person per day, a small-group departure $140–170, and a day trip $45–128.

Why there is no single number

Two trips of the same length in Thailand can differ by a factor of four, and it is almost never about the hotels alone. What moves the price is whether the vehicle and guide are yours alone, how many times you move between bases, and whether the boat is shared or private. Those three decisions account for most of the gap between a $1,400 trip and a $3,000 trip of identical length.

The tables below are organised the way people actually book: a multi-day route, then day trips, then the transfers and tickets that sit around it. If you are building a budget, start with the per-day number for the style you want, multiply by nights, and add the day trips.

Multi-day routes

Private departures, priced per person based on two sharing, with hotels, private transport, a guide and all entrance fees included. The last column is the same price divided by nights, which is the number to compare against other operators.

RouteLengthPer personPer day
Andaman Island Escape7 days$1,690$241

Classic Thailand Journey10 days$2,480$248
Thailand for Families12 days$2,950$246

Day trips, by city

Private, per person, with hotel pickup, guide, transport and entrance fees included. The cheapest thing on this list is a food walk at $45; the most expensive is a full day on a boat at $128, and the $83 difference is almost entirely fuel, crew and national park fees.

What is inside these prices

A private tour at $230–250 per person per day includes: a four-star hotel with breakfast (or the grade you choose), a private vehicle with driver and fuel, tolls and parking, an English-speaking guide who stays with you, all entrance fees and national park fees, and the planning. It does not include international flights, lunches and dinners unless the itinerary says so, drinks, tips, travel insurance, or visa fees.

Day trips include hotel pickup and drop-off, the guide, transport, entrance fees and — on full days — lunch. They do not include drinks beyond water, tips, or the optional extras that some operators quietly charge for: a boat upgrade, a kayak, a photograph.

What makes it more expensive

Moving between bases. Every internal flight is $45–90 and eats most of a day. Four bases instead of three adds roughly $150 per person to a ten-day trip and removes a day of holiday.

Peak dates. The same sea-view room in Phuket costs roughly double between 20 December and 10 January. Christmas and New Year are the only periods where we cannot hold a hotel price.

Private boats. A private speedboat is about 2.5 times the shared fare. It buys departure time and a route you choose, which on Phi Phi is the difference between Maya Bay at 07:50 and Maya Bay at 10:30.

Hotel grade. Moving from four-star to five-star adds $80–200 per person per night depending on the coast. It is the single largest lever in the whole budget and the one we ask about first.

What makes it cheaper

Travel in May, June, September or October — the shoulder months — and hotels fall 30–50%. Choose the Gulf coast in the Andaman's low season or vice versa, rather than fighting the monsoon. Take a small-group departure instead of private on the days when a group is genuinely fine. And take one base instead of three: the cheapest thing you can do to a Thailand trip is stop moving.

Questions

Prices, answered

How much does a 10-day Thailand tour cost?

A private 10-day tour with four-star hotels, a guide and all entrance fees costs about $2,480 per person based on two sharing — roughly $250 per person per day. Booking the same route yourself with mid-range hotels, internal flights and day tours bought locally lands around $1,400–1,600 per person. The difference pays for the guide, the private vehicle, and someone to fix the day a flight moves. A small-group version of the same length with comparable hotels runs $1,400–1,700 per person.

Is it cheaper to book a Thailand tour or do it yourself?

Doing it yourself is cheaper, reliably, by 35–45%. What you lose is timing knowledge — being at the Grand Palace at 08:30 instead of 09:30, knowing which boat leaves before the fleet — and the ability to fix things in real time. The honest framing: if your time is worth more than $60 a day and you have ten days, a private tour is rational. For a two-week backpacking trip, it is not, and we will tell you so.

Why are day trips so different in price?

Almost entirely transport and fees. A $52 food walk is a guide and six plates. A $128 marine park day is a speedboat, two crew, ฿300 of national park fees per person, kayaks, snorkel gear and lunch. Independent operators are not cheaper for the same thing — the real saving is a shared boat, which costs about 40% less and means a fixed departure time and 30–40 people aboard.

Do prices include flights?

No international flights. Domestic flights inside a multi-day route are included in the package price where the itinerary says so — the Classic Thailand Journey includes one, Thailand for Families includes two. If you are booking a day trip or a transfer, nothing flight-related is included. Domestic one-way tickets in Thailand run $45–90 and we book them directly as an IATA-accredited agency.

What is not included, and what will I actually spend on top?

Budget $35–60 per person per day for lunches, dinners, drinks and tips if you eat well but not extravagantly. Add a massage ($10–17), a SIM card ($10–17 for two weeks), and shopping. On a private tour that is the entirety of it: entrance fees, transport and hotels are already inside the price. The one thing people forget is travel insurance, which is compulsory on our bookings and costs $4–8 a day.

Do you charge a booking fee or commission?

No. The quoted price is the price — no card surcharge, no booking fee, no "service charge" on arrival, and no commission from shops or restaurants because we do not take any. Deposits are 20% with the balance due 30 days before arrival. If a hotel raises its rate after we confirm, that is our problem, not a supplement added to your invoice.

Give us dates and party size and we will send a fixed price for the whole trip.
