Doi Tung and the Mae Fah Luang gardens
A Swiss-style chalet on a Thai mountain, built by a princess who decided the way to stop opium farming was to give the hill villages a better crop. The gardens are the photograph; the coffee is the story.
The Doi Tung day tour costs $92 per person and covers the royal villa, the Mae Fah Luang hillside gardens at 1,400 metres and a working Akha coffee village. It runs eight hours from Chiang Rai. Villa and garden admission and the coffee tasting are included.

Why a chalet is on a Thai mountain
The Doi Tung royal villa was built in 1987 for the Princess Mother, who had spent the previous twenty years running a development project in the hills here. Her logic was unromantic and correct: opium paid better than rice, so the project had to produce something that paid better still — coffee, macadamia, cut flowers, and a handicraft programme that still employs several hundred people.
The villa itself is modest, pine-panelled, and full of her own furniture. It takes forty minutes. The Mae Fah Luang garden next door takes two hours and is the part people remember: 400 species of rhododendron and azalea on a hillside at 1,400 metres, cool enough in December that you want a jacket.
The hill villages
Between the garden and the mountain road there are Akha and Lahu villages that are part of the same project rather than tourist performances. We stop at one, and it is a real stop: the workshop is a workshop, the coffee is roasted there, and nobody is dressed for a photograph.
What we do not do
We do not run the long-neck village at Mae Salong, and we will tell you why if you ask. There is a separate page on how we handle village visits at all.

Before you book
Is Doi Tung cold?
Cool, not cold. December and January mornings at the garden run 12–16°C; the rest of the year it is pleasant rather than chilly. Bring a light layer between November and February and nothing more.
Are the villages ethical to visit?
The ones on this route are part of the Mae Fah Luang development project and receive a share of the entrance fees. We do not visit the long-neck village at Mae Salong, where entry is charged to photograph people in their own homes.
Can we combine Doi Tung with the Golden Triangle?
They are on opposite sides of Chiang Rai and each is a full day. Combining them means eight hours in a car and forty minutes at each stop. Do one.
Is the garden accessible?
Partly. The upper terraces are stepped; the lower loop and the villa are step-free with a ramp. Tell us in advance and we arrange the shuttle to the top.
Check your date.
Tell us the day and how many of you — we confirm the garden hours, which change with the season.
