Chinatown after dark
Yaowarat at 20:00 is the best food street in the country: charcoal grills, neon, and a hundred stalls where the queue tells you what to order. Six stops, one guide who eats here weekly.
How the walk works
We meet at Wat Mangkon MRT — air-conditioned, no traffic negotiation — and walk a loop of about 2 km through the side streets before hitting the main road after dark. Six tastings: fishball noodles, charred satay, oyster omelette, a Chinese-Thai dessert, and two things the guide chooses on the night based on what is good.
Group size is capped at eight because the good stalls have four seats. That is not a marketing line, it is the reason the tour exists at all.
What to expect
Standing to eat at some stops, sitting on plastic stools at others. Spice levels explained before you order. Vegetarian and no-pork routes are possible with notice. It ends at 22:30 near the MRT, which matters more than it sounds — taxis in Yaowarat at that hour refuse the meter.
| Stop | What | Why here |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Fishball noodles | Same family for 40 years |
| 2 | Charcoal satay | Grilled to order, 15-min wait |
| 3 | Oyster omelette | The one with the queue |
| 4–5 | Guide choice | Changes weekly by what is good |
| 6 | Chinese-Thai dessert | Ends the night |
Six tastings, one drink per stop, an English-speaking guide, a route map to keep. Not included: extra dishes, alcohol, tips.
Before you book
Can vegetarians join?
Yes, with notice — four of the six stops have vegetarian versions. Strict vegan is harder on Yaowarat and we will say so.
Is it suitable for children?
From about ten. It is a 2 km walk in heat with standing, and the food is adventurous by design.
