Samui is the Gulf, not the Andaman — different weather, different water, different season. The island itself takes half a day to drive; the reason to be here is what sits around it: the 42 islands of Ang Thong, and Koh Tao an hour and a half north.
Two of these are boat days worth planning your whole trip around, and two are half-day island drives for the day you would rather not be on water.

This is the thing most itineraries get wrong. The Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Phi Phi) is dry November to April and wet May to October. The Gulf coast — Samui, Phangan, Tao — is the reverse: wettest October to December, best January to August. Booking Samui in November because "it's Thailand's dry season" is how people end up watching rain from a $300-a-night pool villa.
If you want both coasts in one trip, come in February or March. That is the only window where both are reliably good, and it is why those weeks sell out first.
The marine park is 42 islands of limestone and jungle an hour north-west of Samui, and the day is built around three stops: the Emerald Lake on Koh Mae Ko, a kayak or snorkel stop, and the viewpoint climb at Wua Talap. The climb is 50 minutes up a rope-and-root path — genuinely hard in heat — and it is the best view in the Gulf.
Speedboat gets you there in 45 minutes with 30–40 people aboard. A private longtail takes twice as long and can only manage the nearer islands. We quote both and tell you which one your dates actually suit.
Chaweng is the busy beach with the airport ten minutes away; Lamai is Chaweng's quieter sibling; Bophut's Fisherman's Village is the one with restaurants worth dressing for; Maenam and Bang Po in the north are quiet and face Koh Phangan. Almost nothing on Samui is walkable except within a single village, so a car with driver for two half-days is usually better value than taxis.
Bangkok Airways flies direct from Suvarnabhumi in 65 minutes into a private airport that is worth seeing on its own. The cheaper route is a flight to Surat Thani plus a 90-minute bus and a 90-minute ferry — about $60 less and five hours more. From Samui to Koh Tao it is a 90-minute catamaran; to Koh Phangan, 30 minutes.
Ang Thong park fee (300 baht), life jackets in adult and child sizes, drinking water, fruit, snorkel gear, kayaks and a dry bag. Lunch on the park's own restaurant pontoon is included on the speedboat trip.
January to August. The Gulf's monsoon runs October to December, which is exactly when the Andaman coast is at its best — the two coasts are out of phase. February and March are the safest months for a trip that includes both.
Yes, and it is the one trip on Samui we would insist on. It is also the only one that is genuinely tiring: a 45-minute speedboat each way, a steep 50-minute climb and a lot of sun. Children under 6 and anyone with knee problems should take the kayak option instead of the viewpoint.
Yes, but it is a long day: 06:30 departure, 90 minutes each way, and about four hours on Koh Tao and Nang Yuan. If you dive, stay a night instead — the morning boats get there before the day-trippers.
Not a self-drive one. The ring road is busy, scooter accidents are the single most common injury we deal with, and taxis are expensive and unmetered. Two half-days with a private car and driver costs less than four taxi trips and includes a guide.
Phuket for infrastructure, hospitals, direct international flights and variety of boat days. Samui for a quieter island, better beaches within walking distance of each other, and Ang Thong. If your dates are October to December, choose Phuket.
Catamaran ferries from Maenam pier: 30 minutes to Phangan, 90 to Tao. We book seats with the transfer to the pier included, because the pier is 20 minutes from most hotels and the queues at peak season are real.
We will check the monsoon pattern, the ferry times and the park closures before quoting.
