The Sanctuary of Truth
All-wood temple, still being carved · entry & guide included · 09:00 or 15:00
Two hours from Bangkok, and most people write it off before they arrive. Pattaya is a family beach, a wooden temple that took thirty years to carve, and a nightlife strip you can simply not visit. We run it as a day trip, or as two nights that break up a Bangkok stay.
Pattaya's reputation comes from one street. These four have nothing to do with it — and the first two are as good as anything on the Andaman coast.

Pattaya has a reputation built on one kilometre of road, and that reputation is not wrong — Walking Street exists and it is exactly what people say it is. What the reputation misses is that the city has two other lives. One is Thai families from Bangkok who come for the weekend, the beach at Jomtien and the seafood in Naklua. The other is a genuinely odd concentration of attractions: a temple built entirely of carved wood, a tropical garden that runs to 500 acres, and an island fifteen minutes offshore with water as clear as Krabi's.
So: if you are travelling with children, or you want a beach within two hours of Bangkok without a flight, Pattaya works. If you are looking for the quiet, empty Thailand of the travel posters, go south instead.
The island has six beaches and they are not interchangeable. Tawaen is where the ferries land — busiest, most facilities, jet skis. Tien is the one to ask for: smaller, calmer, better swimming, a ten-minute songthaew ride over the hill. Samae is the local beach, cheapest food, fewest tourists. We default to Tien and say so up front rather than dropping you at the pier.
A day trip from Bangkok is 2 hours each way, which leaves you about six usable hours. Enough for the Sanctuary of Truth and one beach, not enough for both plus Koh Larn. Two nights lets you do the temple in the morning, the island on a full day, and drive back after breakfast — which is what most families end up preferring.
Motorway 7 the whole way, 2 hours outside rush hour and 3 inside it. We leave Bangkok at 07:00 or after 09:30, never at 08:00. Private car with a driver is the default; the Pattaya bus from Ekkamai is cheaper and takes 2.5 hours to the north road terminal, which is not where the hotels are.
Sanctuary of Truth in the morning while it is still cool, lunch in Naklua, then Tien Beach until 16:00. Skip the floating market — it is a shopping venue dressed as a market, and the real floating markets are west of Bangkok.
Yes, and it is one of the most practical beach options from Bangkok with children — two hours by car, no flight, shallow water at Jomtien, and attractions built for kids. We book families into Jomtien or Naklua, never Walking Street.
About two hours including the guided walk and the carving demonstration. It is still under construction and has been for thirty years, which is part of the point — you watch carvers working.
The water is genuinely clear and it is fifteen minutes from the pier, which Krabi cannot offer. It is busier and smaller. For a two-hour-from-Bangkok beach day, it is the best available answer.
Yes, with a 07:00 departure. You get the temple and one beach. If you also want Koh Larn, stay a night — the day trip becomes four hours of driving for six hours on the ground.
No. None of the itineraries on this page go there. If you want to see it, tell us and we will drop you at the north end and collect you — but we will not build a family day around it.
Hua Hin is quieter, more Thai-royal, better restaurants, worse swimming. Pattaya has the island and the attractions. With children we usually suggest Pattaya; with couples, Hua Hin.
Two hours by private car, and we will tell you honestly whether one day or two nights suits your schedule.
