Chiang Rai is the north's northern capital — three hours from Chiang Mai, forty minutes from the Golden Triangle, and the only province in Thailand where you can stand at the meeting point of three countries. It is also where the north's best modern architecture is, and almost none of it is old.
Chiang Rai day trips start at $45 per person and the two that justify the trip are the White Temple and the Golden Triangle. Two nights is enough for both plus Doi Tung. Come November to February and avoid March and April, when the north's burning season arrives.
Two of these are the reason people come; two are what makes the stay worth two nights instead of one. All four are private, and all four start from your hotel rather than a coach park.

They are not the same trip and the drive between them is three hours on a good road, four in the rainy season. Chiang Mai is a city of 1.2 million with an airport, hospitals, a food scene and 300 temples. Chiang Rai is a provincial town of 70,000 with one good museum, three extraordinary buildings and the Mekong an hour away.
The practical answer: sleep in Chiang Mai for the food and the old city, take two nights in Chiang Rai for the temples and the border. Doing Chiang Rai as a day trip from Chiang Mai means six hours in a car for four hours there, which is why we quote it as a long day only when people insist.
This is the thing visitors get wrong. The White Temple was begun in 1997 and is still being built. The Blue Temple was finished in 2016. The Black House was one artist's lifetime project, completed after his death in 2014. What you are seeing is contemporary Thai art at architectural scale, funded privately, and it is more interesting for it — but do not come expecting Sukhothai.
For actual age, go to Chiang Saen on the Mekong: a walled city that was a capital in the 14th century, with two restored temples that see almost no foreign visitors.
November to February is cool, clear and the right answer. December and January mornings at Doi Tung run 12–16°C, which surprises people packing for Thailand.
March and April are the burning season. Agricultural fires and forest fires across the region push PM2.5 to levels that close schools, and the hills disappear into haze for weeks. This is not a marketing caveat — it is the single most important thing to know about travelling in the north in spring. If your dates are fixed in March, we will tell you honestly and suggest the Gulf coast instead.
Chiang Rai's airport (CEI) is 15 minutes from town, with direct flights from Bangkok in 75 minutes for about $45. By road from Chiang Mai it is 190 km, three hours, on a dual carriageway most of the way. We collect from either, and the drive itself is worth doing once in daylight — tea terraces, limestone outcrops, and a hot spring stop that everyone asks to skip and then enjoys.
The White Temple is also run as a long day trip from Chiang Mai, with a 07:00 start and about six hours of driving. It is on a separate page because it is a different product: same temple, different base, different day.
Yes — one night and you see the White Temple and leave. Two nights lets you add the Golden Triangle or Doi Tung, which are the two days that make the drive worth it. Three if you want both plus a slow morning.
You can, and we run it: a 07:00 start, the White Temple, lunch, and back by 19:00. It is six hours of driving for four hours there. If you have the time, sleep in Chiang Rai instead.
Bad enough that we advise against it. PM2.5 in Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai regularly exceeds 150 µg/m³ in March and April, schools close, and the mountains vanish. November to February is clear. If your dates are fixed in spring, go south.
No. The boat from Sop Ruak lands at Don Sao, a Lao market island where day visitors come ashore without a visa or a stamp. Bring your passport — it is checked occasionally, and you need it to re-enter Thailand.
The villages on the Doi Tung route are part of the Mae Fah Luang development project and receive a share of the fees. We do not visit the long-neck village at Mae Salong, where admission is charged to photograph people at home.
Chiang Khong, two hours east, is the land border to Huay Xai with a visa-on-arrival post, and the slow boat to Luang Prabang leaves from there. We arrange the transfer and can hold a driver on the Thai side; we do not sell the Laos boat itself.
We will check the smoke forecast, the temple closures and the border hours before quoting.
