Thailand for Families

Twelve days built around shorter drives, connecting rooms and a beach at the end with no early starts. The version of Thailand that works when one of you is eight years old and the other has had enough temples by day four.

The route

Bangkok · Kanchanaburi · Hua Hin

The mistake most family itineraries make is treating children like small adults: the same route, slower. This one is a different route. Bangkok for two nights, then west to the river and the waterfalls, then south to a beach where the sea is calm and the pool is close to the room.

Days 1–2 — Bangkok, gently

Arrival transfer and a pool afternoon. Day two is one temple (Grand Palace, early), one boat ride, and a long lunch. No second temple. Children remember the longtail, not the Emerald Buddha.

Days 3–5 — Kanchanaburi

Two and a half hours west by private car. The Bridge on the River Kwai and the war cemetery, taken at a pace that allows questions. Then Erawan Falls — seven tiers of turquoise pools you can swim in — with a guide who knows which tier is safe for children on your date. One night in a river raft house.

Days 6–11 — Hua Hin

Three hours south to a beach town the Thai royal family uses, which tells you something about the water: calm, shallow, no jet skis. Six nights in a resort with connecting rooms. Days include a fishing village morning, a market food walk children actually enjoy, and two completely free days.

Day 12 — Depart

Transfer to Bangkok airport (3 hrs) or Hua Hin airport for the short flight. Late flights keep the room until 14:00.

Questions

Travelling with children

What age is this designed for?

Four to twelve. Under four, the drives and the heat are difficult regardless of itinerary, and we would suggest fewer bases — Bangkok plus one beach. Over twelve, the Classic journey works better.

Are car seats available?

Yes, booster and full child seats, free, but they must be requested at booking so the right vehicle is assigned. Thai law does not require them; we use them anyway.

Is the water at Hua Hin safe for children?

It is the calmest mainstream beach in Thailand — shallow for a long way out, no jet skis in the main section, and lifeguards in high season. The trade-off is that it is not the clearest water in the country. For children under eight, that is the right trade.

Can you supply a babysitter?

Yes, at the Hua Hin resort, booked through the hotel and vetted by them. Around $12–18 per hour. Give us a day's notice.

Tell us the ages.

Drives, room configuration and the pace all change with the ages — we plan from that, not from a template.
