Damnoen Saduak floating market
The most photographed market in Thailand, and still worth it — if you leave at 06:00. Coaches arrive at 09:00 and the difference between those two hours is the entire experience.
What it actually is
A working canal system west of Bangkok where boats still sell fruit, flowers and hot food from the water. The main strip is entirely given over to tourists by 09:00; the side canals are not, and that is where the thirty-minute longtail takes you.
We arrive at 07:30, walk the main canal while it is still mostly vendors setting up, then take a private longtail through the narrow khlongs where people live, before the market becomes a crush. By 10:00 we are driving back and you are at your hotel by 11:30.
Buying things
Prices at the first boats are for tourists. Walk to the far end of the strip, where the same mango is half the price. Cash only, small notes — nobody has change for ฿1,000 at 07:45.

Before you book
Is it too touristy?
At 09:00 yes. At 07:30 it is fine, and the side canals are genuinely local. The alarm clock is the whole trick.
Can we do it on any day?
Yes, it runs daily. Weekends are busier with Thai visitors.
Is there a better market?
Amphawa is nicer but only opens Friday to Sunday in the evening. For a morning half-day from Bangkok, Damnoen is the only one that works every day.
